Warts are small, rough growths caused by a viral infection in the skin, often appearing on the hands, feet, or other parts of the body. Though usually harmless, warts can be unsightly and sometimes cause discomfort. At My Dermatology Clinics, we offer effective treatments to remove warts safely and efficiently, ensuring minimal scarring and a smooth recovery.

Symptoms

  • Small, raised growths on the skin, often with a rough or bumpy texture.
  • Common warts often appear on the hands or fingers.
  • Plantar warts, found on the soles of the feet, may cause pain when walking.
  • Flat warts, which are smaller and smoother, can appear on the face, legs, or arms.
  • Warts may be flesh-coloured, brown, or grey and may have small black dots (blood vessels) in the centre.

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Causes:

    • Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through small cuts or abrasions.
    • Direct contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces.
    • Autoinoculation, where a person spreads the virus to different areas of their own body.
  • Risk Factors:

    • Weakened immune system, which makes the body less able to fight off HPV infection.
    • Frequent exposure to environments like public swimming pools, where the virus thrives.
    • Personal habits, such as biting nails or picking at warts, which can spread the virus.
    • Having close contact with someone who has warts.

Treatment Options

  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the wart using liquid nitrogen to destroy the tissue and remove the wart.
  • Electrosurgery: Using electrical currents to burn off the wart.
  • Laser Therapy: Targeting the wart with laser light to destroy the infected tissue.
  • Topical Treatments: Prescription creams or solutions containing salicylic acid or other ingredients to dissolve the wart over time.
  • Minor Surgical Excision: Cutting the wart off with a scalpel or surgical scissors for larger or more stubborn warts.
  • Cantharidin Treatment: A chemical applied to the wart to cause it to blister and peel off.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid direct contact with warts on others’ bodies or contaminated surfaces.
  • Keep your skin clean and dry, particularly in areas prone to warts like the hands and feet.
  • Do not pick at or scratch warts, as this can spread the virus to other areas of your body.
  • Wear footwear in public showers or swimming pools to reduce exposure to the HPV virus.
  • Strengthen your immune system through a healthy diet and proper hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
